A number of different combinations of tritium breeding material, neutron multiplier, structural material, and coolant will be tried out on ITER to determine the best combination for tritium and power production. Each one of these solutions is referred to as a "breeding technology". A future fusion plant producing large amounts of power will be required to breed all of its own tritium; ITER will test this essential concept of tritium self-sustainment.
If blanket modules contain lithium, a reaction occurs: the incoming neutron is absorbed by the lithium atom, which recombines into an atom of tritium and an atom of helium. The tritium can be removed from the blanket and recycled into the plasma as fuel. Blankets containing lithium are thus considered to be "breeding blankets" for tritium. Within the fusion reaction, tritium can be ‘bred’ indefinitely.
This will be important technology for future fusion power reactors.

Combined heat and power (CHP) is a specific form of distributed generation (DG) that refers to the placement of electric-power-generating units at or near customer facilities to supply on-site energy needs. CHP enhances DG’s advantages by the simultaneous production of thermal and power output, thus increasing overall efficiency. Once available only to large commercial buildings and urban areas, CHP systems — sometimes referred to as “cogeneration” — are now produced on a scale that’s safe, practical and affordable to homeowners.
Im Rahmen des europäischen Emissionshandels müssen die Betreiber fossiler Kraftwerke und bestimmter Industrieanlagen über CO2-Zertifikate verfügen. Die Zertifikate berechtigen zum Ausstoß einer bestimmten Menge an Kohlendioxid in die Atmosphäre. Daher werden die Zertifikate auch Emissionsrechte genannt. Die Menge an CO2-Zertifikaten ist begrenzt und sinkt über die Zeit.
Kohlenstoffdioxid ist ein farb- und geruchloses und in den üblichen Konzentrationen unschädliches Gas aus Kohlenstoff und Sauerstoff. Es ist mit 0,04 % ein natürlicher Bestandteil der Luft. CO2 ist erst ab sehr hohen Konzentrationen gefährlich. Unter 0,3 % ist es auch bei dauernder Einwirkung gesundheitlich unbedenklich. Ab etwa 5% können Schwindel und Bewusstlosigkeit auftreten und ab 8% wirkt es in 30 bis 60 Minuten tödlich. Da Kohlenstoffdioxid zum Treibhauseffekt beiträgt, stört ein Konzentrationsanstieg das Temperaturgleichgewicht der Atmosphäre. Unnatürliche CO2-Quellen, wie die Verbrennung von fossilen Brennstoffen, sind deshalb klimarelevant.
